The Sopranos is one of those great shows you can catch on TV late at night, and you expect it to be on when nothing else is. It is packed full of humor that almost anyone can relate to, and includes problems that real people can actually understand. Rather than watching some crazy soap opera with twisted story lines, The Sopranos brings out the humor in everyday live even just by sitting in a coffee shop and chatting with friends.
The Sopranos was HBOs most successful series, winning 5 Golden Globes and over 80 other awards. It was the first cable-television series to win an Emmy and rekindled America's love affair with the US mafia. The series began with New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano going to see a psychiatrist, which is a big no-no in the underworld, and unfolded into a peek into the life of America's "Untouchables." Even though he led a high-powered lifestyle, Tony Soprano and all the other characters were believable and easy to relate to, which is what makes the show so appealing. Who doesn't have a batty sister or rebellious teenage children?
Created by David Chase who also was involved in the writing of every episode, The Sopranos aired on HBO from 1999-2007 with 86 episodes. An edited-for-network-TV version is currently in syndication on A&E. Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, is a high-up mafia boss. While the audience gets the opportunity to follow Tony around at work in the "waste management industry," much time is devoted to his home life, where we meet his wife Carmela (Edie Falco), and two children, A.J. (Robert Iler) and Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler).
Over the years, many important characters have come and gone, many leaving in a casket. During the first season we meet the most important character's including Tony's psychiatrist Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), his quirky co-worker Paulie Walnuts (Tony Sirico), Silvio Dante (Stephen van Zandt, of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band), and the family. Many popular actors and actresses have had minor roles on the show such as Steve Buscemi (Tony's cousin Tony Blundetto) and Annabella Sciorra (Gloria, one of Tony's girlfriends).
One of the greatest things about the show is that characters appear and reappear all the time. A show about the mafia is bound to have police involvement, and the FBI plays roles throughout the series. In Season Four, an undercover agent convinces someone close to the family to try to get information in exchange for their immunity. The end of the series brings a surprising twist as the same agents who were after Tony Soprano in the beginning tip him off about one of his rivals.
One of the most popular characters is Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli). Besides Tony, this is one of the most dynamic characters in the series. We watch him rise in power in the family, but also see how he struggles with addiction and anger issues. It is cool to watch an actual screenwriter play someone who wants to be a screenwriter.
Like every long running television series, there are lots of juicy tidbits surrounding the series. For example, David Chase was a huge fan of Steven van Zandt's music and wanted him to audition for the main character, even though he had no experience. van Zandt thought the lead role should go to someone more experienced, so the role of Silvio Dante, who begins below Tony and ends up as his consigliore or advisor, was created just for him.
If you enjoy a rich plot, great action, and a show where your typical bad guy isn't so bad after all, definitely check out The Sopranos. It has changed the face of cable forever, and my heart will always have a soft spot for a New Jersey "garbageman" and his "family."
